10 Things You Can Do To NOT Catch a Cold

With people going back to their workplaces more often, children going back to school, and the start of cooler weather we can all expect to be exposed to cold viruses.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could avoid catching a cold?

There are some things you can do to better your chances of staying cold-free this year (if you have kiddos in school, you need to be extra diligent).

10 things you can do to NOT Catch a Cold

  1. Wash your hands: You could cut your risk of respiratory illness by 45% by washing your hands at least five times a day.

  2. Keep your hands away from your nose and eyes: Most colds are caught here because your eyes and nose do not have the same protective mechanisms as your mouth.

  3. Get 7.5-8 hours of sleep per night: People who sleep only 4 hours a night produce half the number of antibodies as those who slept the full amount.

  4. Drink plenty of water.

  5. Go outside: We tend to catch colds in situations where we are inside and closer to each other.

  6. Carry and use your own pen: Don’t use the public pens at the doctor’s office, the bank, or restaurants, as they have been touched by many others. Viruses can live from 20 minutes to 2 hours or more on surfaces like tables, doorknobs, and desks.

  7. Carry hand sanitizer with you: It doesn’t replace hand washing, but when used in a pinch can cut your risk of a stomach bug by 59%.

  8. Reduce the stress in your life: Go out and socialize, talk with a friend, get a massage (perhaps here at Left Coast Fitness? Check out Eric Summers, our massage therapist).

  9. Move more: Immune cell function improved 45% in adults who were physically active for at least three hours a week.

  10. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and grains: They are packed with antioxidants to help your body fight off colds and flu.
